Tung Wah Group of Hospitals Social Service - Nursery Service

Tung Wah Group of Hospitals (TWGHs) is the largest and oldest charitable organization in Hong Kong providing medical, hygienic, educational and community services via over 309 service units across Hong Kong Island, Kowloon and New Territories. TWGHs began its nursery school services in 1968, and now has 15 registered non-profit Kindergarten-cum-child care centres under its name, providing young children under the age of 6 daycare and educational services (including services for handicapped children). The curriculum takes into account age development and diverse learning needs, and aims at helping young children develop their leanring attitudes and healthy habits in a pleasant environment.

Mission and objectives

  • To provide a supportive environment in which children can grow happily and healthily under the tutelage of professionally qualified teachers.
  • Enable children to actively inquire, establish learning ability and cultivate a positive learning attitude.
  • To provide diverse, inspiring and challenging programmes, allowing children to develop cognitively, linguistically, socially, emotionally, physically, creatively and in civic virtue.
  • To cultivate good daily habits, learning interests and self-care ability in children, as well as develop their coordination in body movements so as to strengthen their bodies.
  • To provide education and support for parents, help solve issues of education and childcare in families, allowing parents to go to work with a peace of mind. Also work alongside parents to facilitate the growth of children.

History

School features

  • ​​​​​Provide children with a safe and suitable environment for growth; using continued and consummate assessment records to observe the various aspects of development of children and foster the next generation.
  • Emphasis on early recognition and intervention; providing appropriate guidance and programmes based on individual differences of children.
  • Emphasis on children’s self-care training, including the abilities to take care of oneself, take care of others and take care one’s surroundings.
  • Oversee children’s emotional development, establish within them senses of security, uniqueness, ability, contact and direction.
  • Acquire life knowledge and skills through the five senses and body; maintaining a pleasant mood, concentration training and body strength.
  • Facilitate fine and gross-motors, pre-writing techniques, and reading/writing abilities through the S.M.A.R.T curriculum.
  • The nursery school’s professional team consists of educational psychologist, physio therapist, occupational therapist, speech therapist, social worker and curriculum officer who work together to provide pedagogical consultation and professional training on a regular basis.

School facilities

The nursery school has a floor area of 362 sq.m., which includes activities rooms, indoor playground, music room, kitchen, laundry, children’s toilet, principal’s room, staff room and store room, etc.
​​​​​​​Each activity room provides diversified, age-appropriate learning corners, such as language corner, English corner, life training corner, book corner, study corner, teaching material corner, toy corner, creative land, news corner and emotion corner, so as to cultivate proactive learning, as well as develop learning interest and potential in children.

School team

Teacher professional qualifications / development

Our principal and teachers have each obtained professional qualification including bachelor’s degree/master’s degree, and are all full of passion and experiences in teaching. The teacher to children ratio is 1 to 11 (1 to 6 in cases of outdoor activities), with social workers and clinical educational psychologists available to provide professional support for families in need.

The nursery school additionally hires registered special pre-school teachers to provide for handicapped children services, occasional child-care services and extended services.

The professional team has a designated educational psychologist, physiotherapist, occupational therapist, speech therapist, social worker and curriculum officer to work together to provide pedagogical consultation and professional training at the nursery school on a regular basis.

Based on the developmental needs of the children, the organization regularly provides professional training for tutors so as to elevate their professional knowledge and skills.
